What Is A Lap Steel Guitar?

If you are not familiar with a lap steel guitar, it is the kind of guitar which is based off from a standard guitar except that the performer can change its pitch by pressing a metal or glass against the strings as oppose to pressing the strings on the fret board. Typically, a lap steel guitar’s strings are raised at both the nut and bridge ends of the fingerboard usually around half an inch. Though a lap steel guitar has frets, they are only there for performance reference and not for the strings to be lay flat on it since the strings are too high to be pressed down the frets.

There are actually three kinds of lap guitar. The first is a Lap Slide Guitar which is the first of its kind. If you would look at it closely, you will notice that it appears similar to a sound box to a Spanish guitar.

The next kind is called Resonator guitars. These are the kinds which often have square necks although there are round neck versions which have a raised nut whose function is to raise the strings.  The third would be the electric lap steel guitars which have a solid body and has six to ten strings.
